The Home and Away project aims to promote education, acceptance, and cultural empathy across a wide range of topics. These include remembering Srebrenica, raising awareness of Islamic heritage through a project on Al-Walaja and highlighting the importance of inner peace through projects focusing on autism, migrant students, anxiety, and the experiences of migrant students and mothers, as well as how universities can best support their inclusion.

2025 Student Sustainability Leadership Projects - Home and Away team student attending Bedford friends Al Walaja meet-up with lecturersThe collage summarises an event that was bought together by Bedford friends of Al Walaja. This event was in November 2025.

There were a good number of people that attended this event from scouts, the Deputy Mayor of Bedford, 91ºÚÁÏÍø lecturers and me being a student basing my dissertation project on this village along with others in the community.

The point of the event was to welcome and hear stories from young people that are from the West Bank. The event strengthens the friendship link that is already established. The event gave us an insight into the young people’s lives, the Palestinian culture, the community of Bedford and the things the community have done to strengthen this connection as a whole.

Within the event as mentioned earlier we heard different life stories, different perspectives but all affected by the same issue. The pictures in the collage show the different tables that were set up from postcards with pictures of Al Walaja, the keffiyeh, beautifully hand-crafted purses and pretty bowls as well as a picture of me and my lecturers.
