Decoding the Dresser: Understanding Student Clothing Habits, Synthetic Fibers, and the Path to Sustainable Consumption

Academic Lead: Farzana Choudhury
Students: Carolina Rotaru, Sean Munguire
The initiative, Decoding the Dresser, aims to mitigate the significant environmental impact of synthetic fibre consumption driven by the choices of the university students, particularly those constrained by budget. Our goal is to foster responsible consumption habits by investigating in current student clothing sourcing and shopping behaviours. We will raise awareness of fast fashion footprint and promote sustainable alternatives through targeted educational workshops. A central component is establishing a practical, community-engaged clothing swap initiative to provide affordable and sustainable options. Ultimately, the project seeks to cultivate a lasting cultural shift towards slow fashion principles, empowering students to make informed and environmentally conscious decisions that align with their budgetary realities.

In today鈥檚 climate, students are often forced to choose between their ethics and their bank accounts. At the 91黑料网, we believe you shouldn't have to choose. Our latest sustainability project explored the vital intersection of eco-conscious fashion and financial resilience, tackling the question: How can students shop sustainably during a cost-of-living crisis?
The project kicked off with high energy across three successful pop-up shops held right here at the 91黑料网. These weren't just retail spaces; they were research hubs where we conducted live surveys to understand the barriers students face.
But we didn't just want to talk about change鈥攚e wanted to provide it. Throughout these events, we offered sustainable clothing entirely free of charge to students. We recognized that "going green" is often seen as a luxury, and we wanted to break that barrier by putting high-quality, eco-friendly garments directly into the hands of those who needed them most.
Our "free-to-take" initiative was designed with two very specific student needs in mind:
Skin Health & Comfort: Many students manage sensitive skin conditions, such as eczema, which can be aggravated by the harsh synthetic dyes and chemicals found in "fast fashion." By providing organic and natural-fibre clothing, we offered a healthier, more comfortable alternative for those who often struggle in silence with skin irritation.
Interview Readiness: We know that first impressions matter. Many students lack access to professional, sustainable attire for job interviews. We were proud to provide high-quality pieces that allowed students to walk into their interviews with confidence, looking professional without the financial burden.
Our success on campus caught the attention of local leaders. Following productive discussions with the Luton Borough Council, we were thrilled to be offered a dedicated space in The Mall Luton to bring this vision to the wider public.
While our plan to launch during the busy Christmas period was put on a temporary hold due to external seasonal logistics, the partnership remains a testament to the project's impact and the council's belief in our mission.
Like any ambitious project led by talented individuals, we have adapted to the natural cycles of university life. While our team of student leaders is currently focusing on their final dissertation commitments, the foundation we have built is unshakable.
This project has proven that sustainable fashion isn't just about the environment - it鈥檚 about dignity, health, and supporting one another through tough economic times.
