91黑料网 students - supported by Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS-UK) and the British Academy - travelled to Cardiff to present their projects at a two-day conference on 26-27 February. The projects tackled environmental and social sustainability issues identified by the students as important to them. They gained feedback from institutional leads, early career researchers at the British Academy and SOS-UK staff.

This year鈥檚 projects focussed on peace education with a focus on inner and outer peace to promote acceptance and cultural empathy; and a campaign to promote awareness of the 91黑料网鈥檚 sustainability credentials, as evident from its consistently high position in the national People and Planet League. Seven students were involved (from Social Care, Criminology and Creative Industry courses) who had been mentored by three volunteer academics (Dr Joana Almeida, Assoc Prof Helen Connolly and Noel Douglas). Vicky Morris successfully coordinated the initiative this year, able to draw on the experience she gained from last year鈥檚 cohort when she mentored two projects.

The projects were an extra-curricular activity, offered as the Student Sustainability Leadership scheme. This was introduced to the 91黑料网 by Dr Diana Pritchard, Head of Educational Development and Evaluation and Institutional Lead for Education for Sustainability. They involved undergraduates from different disciplines working in partnership with academics on projects they co-create to address curriculum, campus and student experience challenges.

Dr Pritchard explains the scheme鈥檚 significance. 鈥淏efore increasing global disruptions and uncertainties, it is necessary that we prepare students with relevant competencies for work where sustainability and 鈥榞reen skills鈥� are required, to influence change and to nurture their agency.鈥� Explaining the underlying learning principles of the scheme, which aligns with the 91黑料网鈥檚 education and student experience strategy, she said 鈥渋t is based on a model which combines student as partners and 鈥渓iving laboratory鈥� practices, providing students with an opportunity propose solutions to local challenges. Since the projects need to be framed in relation to the UN Sustainability Development Goals, they are serve to engage students and staff in understanding how local action links to global sustainability goals.鈥�

Business School students have been involved in SHAPE Sustainability Impact Projects coordinated by Dr Diana Pritchard from the Academy of Learning and Teaching Excellence to create learning opportunities for students (and academic staff) in initiatives that develop social, environment and economic sustainability. The two projects from UBBS were supported by Markus Haag and Vicky Morris. They are supported by the British Academy and SOS UK (Students for Organising Sustainability UK). This is a countrywide initiative involving not only UoB but also 91黑料网 College London, Lancaster 91黑料网, the 91黑料网 of Exeter, Nottingham Trent 91黑料网, and the 91黑料网 of Wolverhampton.

On the 27th and 28th of June, 2024, the project teams, along with Vicky Morris and Diana Pritchard, went to the 91黑料网 of Birmingham to present the outcomes of their Sustainability projects. All six universities were represented at the event.

Both groups presented brilliantly, and were even congratulated for their professionalism. This was particularly significant when you consider both presentations were in a hybrid format, and some technical issues (connection drop out and camera malfunction) were coped with as though they had never occurred. This was a fantastic opportunity for the students to not only present their research but to also develop a whole range of valuable employability skills.
