International travel

The following information is to help you understand the risk and insurance issues when you travel overseas on 91黑料网 business. Your Head of School or department will need to approve overseas travel and in some cases a risk assessment will be required. You may also need approval from your Executive Dean or director if the travel is high-risk.

Pre-international travel checklist

Assessing travel risk

Prior to international travel you must review the safety and security information provided by (our travel risk management portal) and the

A risk assessment will be required for high-risk travel, which is:

  • Locations where the UK has advised against all but essential travel to, and / or
  • Locations where has given a risk score of High (3.5 or more) for any of the risk factors given on their site (i.e. Security, infrastructure, environment, health and medical, political, legal).
  • Fieldwork where fieldworkers will be undertaking 鈥渉igh-risk鈥 activities: That is fieldwork that involves hazardous or adventurous activities, such as trekking in remote areas and water-based activities.

There may be other factors that affect the risk, so please use our Travel Risk Calculator to determine the risk level.

If your trip is high-risk you will need to record a risk assessment and your director or Executive Dean will need to approve the trip. Please contact [email protected] if you need assistance with the Travel Risk Calculator and risk assessment.

Allow at least three weeks prior to travel for the risk assessment and approval process.

Extreme risk travel: Travel to locations where the  advises against all travel, or for which scores as Extreme (4.5 and above) will not normally be approved.

Travel safety e-learning

Please complete the Crisis24Horizon E-Learning: Personal Security Awareness Training (or an equivalent course) available through the before undertaking international travel. When you complete each module you will receive an email which you can show your manager. (Students can be briefed by the trip leader as an alternative).

Travel insurance cover

Our travel insurers, UMAL publishes a summary of our Travel Insurance cover and details of how to get help in a travel emergency. This information should be taken with you when you travel and is available by contacting: [email protected]

If you have a medical condition before you travel, please seek your doctor's advice and approval for you to travel before you leave. Our insurance may not cover your condition unless your doctor has approved your travel.

Travel emergencies

In the event of an emergency whilst travelling, call the International Medical group (IMG) for advice and assistance. They can be contacted 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. IMG will assist you with your requirements and decide on the most appropriate course of action to help you through an emergency.
